Applications of Ego State Therapy in Japan: Clinical Practices across Diverse Fields

This symposium examines the theoretical development and clinical applications of Ego State Therapy (EST) in Japan, tracing its evolution from personality-based foundations to trauma-informed and mind–body integrative practices. The presenters highlight how Ego State Therapy has been adapted and expanded across various contexts. 

Mei Mizomoto (Clinical Psychologist, M.A.) discusses psychoeducational interventions for non-dissociative adult clients, illustrating the foundational structure of EST. 

Kumiko Shimoji (Clinical Psychologist, M.A.)  reports on work with clients with intellectual disabilities, emphasizing flexibility and nonverbal approaches. 

Yoko Niikawa (Clinical Psychologist, M.A.)  presents an integrated treatment model combining EST and TF-CBT for a child with complex trauma and dissociation. 

Yusuke Suzuki (Psychosomatic Physician, M.D.) explores negotiations with abuser introjects in dissociative disorders. 

Mayuko Shimizu (Clinical Psychologist, M.D.), a psychiatrist, examines identity reconstruction in chronic depression beyond Criterion A trauma. 

Eiji Toyota (Psychosomatic Physician, M.D.) demonstrates psychosomatic applications of EST for patients with intractable chronic pain. 

Chaired and discussed by Yoshikazu Fukui, (Clinical Psychologist, Professor) the panel will discuss EST as an emerging model of the multidimensional self.
